The BGS Informatics team comprises about 70 staff in total.

IT staff

We have around 50 IT development staff specialising in a diverse range of fields, including:

  • data modelling
  • database design and implementation
  • mobile app development for a range of platforms
  • open-standard spatial data delivery
  • spatial-data visualisation systems (2D and 3D) for browser and desktop
  • systems development using object-orientated programming
  • training and skills transfer in all aspects of the data life cycle
  • Windows, UNIX and LINUX systems implementation

UKSO and mySoil

Their expertise covers the following technologies:

  • Development languages: .NET, asp, C++, ColdFusion, HTML, Java, JavaScript, Node.js, Objective C, php, python
  • RDBMS: MySQL, Oracle, PostgreSQL, SQL Server (and spatial extensions)
  • Spatial data software for data portal and data services: ArcGIS Server, Deegree, GeoServer, MapServer, Rasdaman
  • Provision of standards-based web services: CWS, OGC WMS, WCPS, WCS, WFS
  • RESTful web services
  • Web and application servers: Apache, JBOSS/WildFly, IIS, Tomcat
  • Operating systems supported: Linux (mainly Centos 5) and other UNIX, Solaris, Windows
  • HPC facilities: a SuperMicro ClusterVision system consisting of 28 nodes, each of 16 cores, with 60 TB of directly attached storage

Data management staff

Managing records

We have around 30 staff responsible for the curation, ingestion and management of data, physical samples and publications. This includes:

  • charging, licensing, publishing and citation of data
  • curation and conservation of borehole and other physical samples
  • working with the development staff to develop digital workflows for data capture, storage, manipulation, delivery and visualisation
  • provision of library and records services
