BGS-University collaborations

The BGS facilitate collaborations with Universities across the UK through joint ventures and appointments. This is to allow us to jointly identify and solve large science problems in a collaborative environment.

BGS University Funding Initiative (BUFI)

BGS funds a number of PhD students in collaboration with UK universities. All of our PhDs for 2020 are in collaboration with a Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) Doctoral Training Partnership (DTP).

Centre for Environmental Geochemistry

The Centre for Environmental Geochemistry combines the University of Nottingham's and BGS's strengths, focussing on the use of geochemistry in research, training and teaching around reconstructing past environmental and climate change, biogeochemical cycling including pollution typing/provenance and the use of geochemical tools for research into the subsurface.

Environmental Geoscience BSc | BGS and Nottingham University

A unique degree in Environmental Geoscience has been launched at The University of Nottingham in collaboration with the BGS.

The Environmental Geoscience course welcomed its first students in October 2014, who will benefit from the expertise of staff from the world's oldest national geological survey and the UK's premier centre for earth science information and expertise as well as internationally renowned academics in one of the leading geography departments in the country.

Twenty-first century environmental geoscience is about people and their interaction with the environment. How do people use natural resources such as building materials, groundwater, oil and gas, and how can the environmental and social impact of this use be managed?

These are issues which geoscientists have been grappling with for a long time, so this degree is an exciting opportunity for students to draw on natural and social science expertise in becoming the next generation of environmental geoscience professionals.

Real World Science

Geology field trip

This course is provided by the School of Geography in conjunction with the BGS. Most teaching will take place on University Park Campus with opportunities to spend time at the BGS in nearby Keyworth.

The course will equip students with skills relevant to the employment market and attuned to the climate, environmental and geographical challenges that will face governments and communities during the 21st century.

Year one: The first year is largely made up of compulsory modules to ensure students have the key foundation level knowledge that will be built upon in years two and three. This includes introductions to atmospheric, oceanic, geological and biogeographical systems, as well as to environmental change.

Year two and three: As well as core modules in geology and techniques training, students will have the option to choose from a range of physical geography modules. In the third year, students submit a 10 000-word dissertation based on a research topic of their choice.

GeoEnergy Research Centre

The GeoEnergy Research Centre (GERC) is a pioneering joint venture co-established by BGS and the University of Nottingham.

Professor Sean Rigby (University of Nottingham).

Prof Melanie Leng (University of Nottingham). Melanie is Director of the Stable Isotope Facility (BGS) and Director of Centre for Environmental Geochemistry (University of Nottingham-BGS).

Dr Xiang Li (China University of Petroleum). Xiang Li researches advanced seismic analysis including anisotropy and rock physics with BGS.

Dr Kathryn Moore (University of Exeter). Kathryn studies metal resource economics at Camborne School of Mines with BGS.

Midlands Energy Consortium

The Midlands Energy Consortium comprises the University of Birmingham, Loughborough University, the University of Nottingham and BGS. The Midlands Energy Consortium is honoured to host the new Energy Technologies Institute (ETI) — a public-private partnership established to speed up the deployment of new low-carbon energy technologies in support of the UK's energy and climate change goals.

Oil and Gas NERC Centre for Doctoral Training

The new Oil and Gas NERC Centre for Doctoral Training (CDT) will focus on creating a highly skilled workforce with expertise that can be used across the wider energy and environmental sectors, as well as filling skills gaps in the oil and gas sector. This will equip the industry with the skills needed to reduce the environmental impact of oil and gas exploration and extraction.

Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage

The Scottish Carbon Capture and Storage (SCCS) is an established centre co-founded by Edinburgh University, Heriot-Watt University and BGS. Founded in 2005, SCCS is funded by the Scottish Funding Council (SFC) and the Energy Technology Partnership (ETP). SCCS accelerates the development of CO2 transportation, capture and subsurface storage. It has particular value to BGS in being close to the Scottish Government, it being an example of a local centre that very successfully 'pulls local funding levers'.

Sir Charles Lyell Centre

BGS and Heriot-Watt University are joining forces to create a new centre for earth and marine science and technology. Based at Heriot-Watt's Edinburgh campus, the Sir Charles Lyell Centre will be one of Europe's leading centres for research and expertise in the earth and marine sciences.
