Senior Management Board

The Senior Management Board is the main decision-making body of the BGS and has responsibility for the corporate governance of the Survey. The responsibility for setting the strategic direction of the science programmes lies with the senior Science, Digital and Innovation group.

BGS Director

Dr. Karen Hanghøj

Karen brings extensive experience to the British Geological Survey, including previous roles at Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, as an academic researcher and in business. Karen is a member of a range of international advisory. Karen joins BGS from EIT RawMaterials, a knowledge and innovation community supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Karen's expertise will ensure the BGS is well-placed to meet future challenges and ensure it continues as a globally-leading survey, delivering services and providing infrastructure support nationally and globally.

Prof Mike Stephenson
Director of science and technology

Prof Mike Stephenson

Mike's role is to ensure the effective delivery and monitoring of BGS science programmes, aligning BGS strategy with NERC strategy. Mike is focused on deploying cutting-edge technologies, such as subsurface sensor networks and real-time monitoring, and establishing a clear path from data to science using 'big data'. Mike is also tasked with improving links between the BGS, HEIs and industry. Mike is a national spokesperson for BGS science, most recently on shale gas and carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Dr Tracy Shimmield | Director, Lyell Centre

Dr Tracy Shimmield

Tracy is the BGS Director of the Lyell Centre, based in Edinburgh, Scotland. The purpose-built £21 m Lyell Centre facilities will enable the British Geological Survey (BGS) and Heriot-Watt University (HWU) to build on their individual and combined interdisciplinary expertise in land and marine conservation, geology and geoscience. As well as contributing to the BGS Executive team, Tracy's role is to ensure effective delivery of the Lyell Strategy, including collaboration with HWU and Scottish Government colleagues to build the Lyell Centre as a Centre for Excellence.

Nicky Poulter
Head of Human Resources

Nicky works with the Executive team to develop a shared understanding of human resources issues, developing a people strategy to ensure that people priorities are considered and resulting actions efficiently implemented to enable delivery of the BGS business plan and future strategy. Nicky also works with HR colleagues across NERC centres to implement staff changes, ensuring that BGS people management practices align with NERC policy and acts as the BGS representative on NERC HR projects and associated working groups.

Amanda Clewes
Head of finance

Amanda Clewes

Amanda works with the BGS Executive to produce our strategic financial plans and forecasts to ensure that they are accurate and comply with NERC policy, government (BEIS) and EU guidelines. Amanda also works with BGS science directors to achieve business and strategic objectives, whilst evaluating the risk and consequence of any major change proposals. Amanda is also the BGS senior representative on NERC finance committees and the NERC EC finance coordinator.

Michelle Bentham
Head of partnerships and innovation

Michelle Bentham

Michelle's role is to work with members of the BGS Executive and science directors to develop partnerships that bring together business, government and civil society with BGS scientists to address the challenges and opportunities of managing the environment. She also works internally within the BGS to develop opportunities to innovate for UK business and societal wellbeing. Michelle has a background in energy geoscience with a focus on carbon capture and storage (CCS).

Jennifer Jamieson Ball
Director of communications and external affairs

Jennifer Jamieson Ball

Jen's role, as part of the executive team, is to develop communication, public relations and government engagement strategies for BGS. Jen will also oversee the Corporate Communications team. Jen is based at The Lyell Centre in Edinburgh. She is an accredited member of the Chartered Institute of Public Relations.
