Dr Karen Hanghøj

Karen brings extensive experience to the British Geological Survey, including previous roles at Geological Survey of Denmark and Greenland, as an academic researcher and in business. She is also a member of a range of international advisory committees.

Karen joined the BGS from EIT RawMaterials, a knowledge and innovation community supported by the European Institute of Innovation and Technology. Her expertise ensures that the BGS is well-placed to meet future challenges and continues to be a world-leading survey, delivering services and providing infrastructure support nationally and globally.

Senior Management Board

Karen is supported by the Senior Management Board, composed of senior BGS staff from across the organisation. The Senior Management Board is the main management decision-making body. Its role includes:

  • supporting the BGS Director in the leadership and governance of the BGS
  • reviewing performance against the BGS business plan
  • reviewing financial performance and business risks
  • reviewing the delivery of the BGS science strategy, the digital strategy and the public science role
