Intellectual Property Rights (IPR)

James Hutton Building, BGS Keyworth

Our Intellectual Property Rights Section provides an advisory and licensing service for the reproduction of our published material and digital map data.

Published Material

Includes books, maps, reports and geology guides that we publish as well as BGS-copyright photographs, map cross-sections, drawings and other materials where BGS has contributed to another organisation's publications or makes such material available directly to the public, for example via this website. Some of the material may be reproduced free of charge when for personal, academic, educational, non-commercial research or other non-commercial use.

If you want to reproduce BGS-published material check:

  1. What sort of licence do I need?
  2. How much will I pay?
  3. Apply for a licence
  4. How do I acknowledge the material?

Digital Data

We publish digital geological map data compatible with geographical information systems (GIS) and database programs. However, we don't sell our digital mapping data to external parties, but grant users a licence to use the data.

If you want to apply for a digital data licence check:

  1. Is the data I want available digitally?
  2. How much will I pay?
  3. Apply for a licence
